Vintage From Paul is delighted to offer this simply stunning Greek Key Needle Etched, Colonial Compote from Fostoria which was manufactured between 1898-1917.

The hexagonal base leads to a simple multi-sided stem which supports the colonial loop and dart bowl of the compote. The bowl of the compote has six loops, each decorated with the Greek Key needle etching. Separating each loop is a beveled dart. The rim of the compote is a rounded saw tooth, gently scalloped to follow the shape of the loops.

From the beginning of the century to the 1920's, the needle etch technique was most popular. Needle etched glass was an acid etching technique applied to thin glass. In the needle etching process, a glass blank was coated with wax. A skilled setter used a complex machine to carve a repeating pattern in the glass, then the piece was placed in an acid dip to create the pattern.

Fostoria was an important makers of this type of glass, but there were many others including Bryce and Tiffin.

The Fostoria Greek Key Needle Etch Loop & Dart Compote is in MINT Condition with no chips, scratches or other defects noted. The needle etch is sharp in detail; the glass is sparkling clear with no sickness or sun purpling. It glows a soft green when black light tested.

The Fostoria Greek Key Needle Etch Loop & Dart Compote stands 5 inches in height, measures 5 inches in diameter at the top, 2-7/8 inches in diameter at the base.
