The 1950's saw a large increase in imported dinnerware which was produced in countries with very low labor costs. This competition took it's toll on the American industry and many potteries did not survive the decade. Homer Laughlin's management decided to shift their emphasis from consumer dinnerware to commercial ware for the hotel and restaurant trade. 1959 saw the introduction of Homer Laughlin's "Best China" brand vitrified hotel china.
Harry M. Stevens, Inc., London-born caterer to crowds at racetracks, ball parks, and arenas began by selling scorecards in Ohio. He moved to New York and won the right to sell scorecards at the Polo Grounds (Most famous for its unusual shape, was baseball's most unique stadium. Built by Giants owner John T. Brush to replace the original Polo Grounds, which burned down April 14, 1911), which led to handling all concessions. When the grandstand burned in 1911, he advanced the money to John T. Brush to rebuild it. His company eventually operated concessions from New York to Mexico.

Both sides of the bowl has the double lion insignia of Harry M. Stevens holding a shield with the letter "S". Under this there is a furled banner with "Harry M. Stevens Inc".
