Iroquois China Company was founded in 1905 in Solvay, New York when Browser Gere and Lemon Stillwell purchased the bankrupt Syracuse China Company building for a song. They immediately began production of classic Victorian fine china. Reorganized in 1913, the company expanded and focused on producing commercial ware which included restaurant, train diner car and hotel lines as well as wares for the US Army and Navy. These lines were vital to the company until 1946 when their first dinnerware lines were introduced. Beginning in the late 1940s, Iroquois developed a keen appreciation for organic materials and simple lines and continued with this mindset in its dinnerware lines. Between 1940 and 1967, Russel Wright designed several mid-century lines for Iroquois China. Other famous designers, such as Ben Seibel, Michael Lax, and Peter Max, worked for Iroquois China Company until 1969 at which time the factory closed
